“He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.” Isaiah 61:1 Convicted drug addicts, drug traffickers and pushers are among those ministered to by Nilda Miole or Ate Nhel at the Pathumthani Prison in Bangkok. Ate Nhel is a volunteer English and Bible teacher with the Christian Prison Ministry of Thailand which reaches to many prison facilities through the Education program, a project of the Royal Thai princess and administered by the Correction Department. Twice a week, she holds two classes in a day, an English language class in the morning and a Bible study class in the afternoon.Knowing that being released from prison will not bring true freedom from the bondage of sin, Ate Nhel has committed herself to sharing with them the true freedom that comes only from knowing Jesus Christ. In her English language class, Ate Nhel uses the Bible as teaching aid to help her students practice their English, and each inmate applies the English language in sharing how God is moving in their lives. In the afternoon, Ate Nhel conducts a purely Bible study class with more than 20 inmates attending. The visiting ACM team joined Ate Nhel one day as co-teachers in both classes. “The prisoners had very deep searching questions and we had an interesting and challenging time answering them,” shares Meg Alag. During that particular session, one inmate raised his hand and asked “Can I receive Jesus into my life now?”. “Of course” Ate Nhel replied with joy. As she was about to lead him to a sinner’s prayer, she asked the other inmates if anyone else wanted to receive Christ. Unexpectedly, three more inmates raised their hands to join in the prayer and receive Christ in their hearts. “What a moving experience that was for all of us,” she adds. Upon their release from prison, many of those reached by this program would stay with the House of Blessing, a halfway home facility for released prisoners. Ate Nhel is a full-time house mother pursuing the discipleship of her “babies” in the Lord until their full integration back into mainstream society. |
